[CanineCancer] Re: MCT and Palladia

Hi Denise,

My dog Tracy (a beagle mix) was diagnosed with MCT and had a tumor removed with clean margins from her hind area in September 2009. Two tumors appeared several weeks back and she had Vinblastin chemo during her first visit to the oncologist. We decided to go the Palladia route during our 2nd visit (last Monday). So Tracy started on Palladia MWF. It’s a pill that I give to her orally with food. Her treatment with Palladia will be MWF Palladia for 6 weeks assuming all goes well. She takes 1/2 prednisone on days without Palladia as well as benadryl 50 mg twice to three times daily, pepcid daily, and prilosec daily. I also give her NK-9 to boost her immunity. In addition, her holistic vet has given her a herbal mixture called “Antler 8″ which is to help with her blood and energy. The holistic vet will not do acupuncture for fear of aggravating the tumors.

Palladia is still a fairly new drug and like all medications, comes with many risks/side effects. Some of the side effects are vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stools, lameness, etc. Fortunately in Tracy’s case, I have not noticed these side effects.

Currently there isn’t a charge for the Palladia except for a dispensing fee. It appears that most oncologist offices got an allotment of Palladia from Pfizer. I’ve heard that once these allotments are used up, the charge for Palladia might be quite high…not sure.

Hope this helps some. I would read up on MCTs as much as possible and read what else you can find about Palladia. There are several people on this site that have used Palladia.

Take care.
