Destination Cure! Angel heads to North Carolina Sunday 5/2/10!


Tomorrow morning Angel will make her way to the cure! (5/2/10) We will load the car tonight and head out 1st thing in the morning.  Romeo, Angel, Johnny and I (Kristie) will drive 12 hours from New Orleans to North Carolina.  


We will get some rest and head to North Carolina State University on Monday.  We arrived a day early so that Angel has the opportunity to meet her new friends and get used to her new surroundings.  Monday evening we will buy Angel a steak dinner- or something like it – and then we’ll shower her with love and pray for her speedy recovery.  


Tuesday, 5/4/10, we will check Angel into NCSU, This is when we will say goodbye to Angel and head back to Louisiana.  NCSU will be Angel’s home for the next 2.5-3 weeks.

  • May 1st: Neupogen injections

  • May 4th: Angel checks in at North Carolina State University

  • May 6th: Angel’s Leukaphresis Procedure

  • May 7th: Angel’s total body irradiation & transplant



We are grateful for every donation that has been made to save Angel’s life! Every person that’s donated has contributed to Angel’s miracle, and we are forever grateful to all of you :)  


We will continue to fundraise while Angel is in the hospital.  The procedure is just the beginning, her need is still great.  Once Angel is checked in donations can be made directly to the school.  We still have roughly $ 6,000 to raise.

Bone Marrow Transplants Offer the Promise of a Cure for Canine Lymphoma



Not long ago, when a dog was diagnosed with lymphoma, one of the most common forms of canine cancer, pet guardians had little reason to hope for a cure.  With success rates of less than 2% and remission times lasting on average just over 12 months, current chemotherapy protocols have not been able to offer much promise of long term success.  But, a new method of treating dogs with lymphoma is changing all of that.

Doctors at North Carolina State University’s (NCSU) Veterinary Teaching Hospital are now using bone marrow transplants (BMT) to treat canine patients with lymphoma – a new application of an existing technology responsible for saving the lives of thousands of humans each year.  It was the impressive success rate of NCSU’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit that convinced Kristie and Johnny Sullens that a BMT was the best chance of saving their dog Angel’s life.  After all, she was a vibrant, 5 year old Carolina Yellow Dog with years of life left to live, and an adoring brother named Romeo that couldn’t stand to be apart from her for even a minute.  From the moment she showed up on their doorstep as a stray puppy, Angel had been their child in every sense, and it was unbearable to imagine their family without her. How could they not do everything possible to attempt a real cure for her cancer?  The vet’s prognosis was that with chemotherapy alone, she would only live another 6-12 months — including six months of treatment.  It just wasn’t enough time.  And so, Kristie and Johnny quickly decided that no matter what it took, Angel would be the 15th dog at NCSU to receive a bone marrow transplant


Although bone marrow transplants (BMT) have only recently become available as an accepted treatment for dogs, they actually started being performed in a research setting about 30 years ago.  Because of the amazing similarities between dogs and humans when it comes to cancer, all of the current human transplant protocols were actually developed using dog subjects.  In fact, 95% of transplant procedures performed on humans were developed using dogs first.  So, it was only a matter of time until this groundbreaking procedure made it full-circle back to the species that originally helped develop it.


To understand more about why BMT is so useful in cancer treatment, it is helpful to understand how chemotherapy and radiation therapy work in animals and humans.  As explained by the National Cancer Institute, “Chemotherapy and radiation therapy generally affect cells that divide rapidly. They are used to treat cancer because cancer cells divide more often than most healthy cells. However, because bone marrow cells also divide frequently, high-dose treatments can severely damage or destroy the patient’s bone marrow. Without healthy bone marrow, the patient is no longer able to make the blood cells needed to carry oxygen, fight infection, and prevent bleeding.”  Because of this risk to bone marrow function, canine patients often receive lower doses of chemotherapy or radiation than needed to completely wipe out all of the cancer cells, and as a result, the cancer usually comes back.  Bone marrow transplants eliminate this problem however, and make it possible for patients to receive very high doses of chemotherapy and radiation, thereby making it more likely that the cancer will be eradicated from the body.


To qualify for a BMT, dogs can be diagnosed with either B-cell or T-cell lymphoma, but they must weigh at least 10 kg and be in clinical remission.  However, that still doesn’t make a dog a good candidate.  For dogs who have serious co-existing conditions or co-morbidities such as Cushing’s Disease, kidney or heart disease, the BMT process would likely put undue stress on their system, creating an unacceptably high risk for them.


Luckily for Angel, she was young, strong, and very healthy in every other respect.  And after a bone marrow aspirate confirmed that she had B-cell Lymphoma, the type of Lymphoma that responds most favorably to treatment, she was well on her way to becoming an ideal candidate for the transplant procedure.  Now, it was just a matter of achieving that all-important clinical remission.


The Bone Marrow Transplant Process


Not willing to waste a minute, immediately after Angel was diagnosed with lymphoma, her vet started her on the 25-week Madison Wisconsin chemotherapy protocol that includes Prednisone and a rotating series of other cancer drugs including Vincristine, Adriamycin and Cytoxan.  And within three weeks of starting chemotherapy, Angel’s cancer went into remission, meaning that there were no clinical signs of the cancer anymore.  At this point, she officially became a candidate for receiving a BMT, although she would still have to wait another six months until her chemotherapy protocol was complete.  In retrospect, this was probably the easiest part of the treatment process.  Recalls Kristie, “The side effects from the Prednisone were a little shocking because it turned Angel into a little piggy and she had to go to the bathroom all the time.  Plus, she was a little crankier than usual.  But overall, we were so surprised at how much energy she had while receiving chemo – she was out chasing squirrels at the park for the better part of her treatment.”


Once Angel’s chemotherapy protocol ended, it was time to begin preparing for the BMT.  Similar to the treatment that most human patients with B-cell lymphoma receive, canine BMT’s involve an “autologous”, or “self” transplant, meaning that a separate donor is not needed.  Instead, the stem cells are taken directly from the patient being treated.  To facilitate this process, Angel had to first receive very high dose chemotherapy about 10 days before the BMT, to destroy as many remaining cancer cells in the body as possible.  She then received a drug called Neupogen, which drives the stem cells from the bone marrow into the peripheral blood where they can be harvested by a special piece of equipment called a leukaphoresis machine.

The harvesting procedure itself took six hours and was done under general anesthesia, as all of Angel’s blood was run through the leukaphoresis machine. She then underwent total body radiation, with the goal of killing any remaining cancer cells in the body.  After all of this, she was finally ready to receive the transplant.  Using a tube called a jugular catheter, the harvested stem cells were reintroduced into her bloodstream in a process similar to receiving a blood transfusion.  Miraculously, these stem cells automatically know how to find their way back to the bone marrow and immediately begin their important work of rebuilding healthy blood cells.


Patients typically remain in the hospital for two weeks following the procedure to recover, and blood samples are drawn and checked regularly to confirm if the transplant is working. Blood transfusions are sometimes necessary when blood platelets drop too low, and this was true in Angel’s case.  But, after a single blood transfusion (thanks to a wonderful canine blood donor) and 4 weeks of recovery time, Angel’s platelets returned to a healthy range, and her transplant was considered a success.


Because of the intensity of this process, Kristie says that the decision to follow-through on the transplant wasn’t always easy.  “We worried about how she would handle being away from us for so long and if the procedure would hurt her, even though we knew that in humans, BMT’s are completely painless.  We also worried about how it would affect her personality. But, whenever we began to doubt whether or not we had made the right choice, we reminded ourselves of the alternative and that kept us moving forward.” 


The Road to Recovery

By the time the patient is ready to go back home following the BMT, they are on zero medications, and officially cancer-free.  But, that doesn’t mean the recovery process is complete.  Lingering effects from the chemotherapy and total body radiation include GI disturbances and significant hair loss.  The most pervasive after-effect of treatment however is tiredness, which can last for up to 1-2 months. 


For Kristie, Angel’s post-BMT recovery time came as a surprise.  “Angel was put on bed rest for the first 6 weeks she was home and we expected her to be sleepy and maybe a little off of her game, but she was like a zombie for the first three weeks and could only walk about ½ block before getting tired.  But after week four, her energy level rebounded so rapidly that it was nearly impossible to keep her down.”


Promise of a Cure


Since bone marrow transplants are so new to veterinary medicine, long term clinical results are not yet available, which can make it difficult to speak authoritatively about cure rates and average survival times.  However, for humans, the procedure results in a 50-60% cure rate in those with B-cell lymphoma, and if history is any indicator, dogs could potentially enjoy a similar outcome as they so often mirror humans when it comes to cancer treatments.  In the meantime, veterinary professionals and pet guardians alike can only marvel at the success they have seen so far in using this procedure with dogs.  But, as with humans, cure is not guaranteed, and some dogs will relapse.  While there is no exact way to know when a dog can be considered ‘out of the woods’, according to Dr. Steven E. Suter, Medical Director of the Canine Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, “with all 4 dogs where the procedure did NOT work, they relapsed within about 3 1/2 months. So, my feeling is that if a patient makes it past this post-BMT timeframe, they will most likely be “cured” or very long-term survivors, remaining cancer free for 2 years or more.” 


Barriers to Treatment


So, if such a highly effective treatment exists and could potentially save the lives of thousands of dogs each year, why aren’t bone marrow transplants becoming a standard treatment protocol for dogs with lymphoma?  The primary reason is that there are few medical facilities capable of offering this treatment option because they lack both the equipment and expertise.  North Carolina State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital is currently the only academic facility in the country performing BMT’s in a clinical setting with staff who have extensive experience using this technique.  27 dogs have already been treated at their facility, and their schedule is currently booked into January.  NCSU’s Dr. Suter is the hands-down expert in performing BMT’s on dogs, and the university has also hired the nation’s first BMT Fellow who will be working with Dr. Suter for the next year to learn all  about canine BMT, so they can begin transplanting even more dogs.  Although there are a few private practices across the country that say they can perform the procedure, the fact is that they do not have the expertise or experience required to really make it a viable option for pet guardians.  As more cases are documented however, and as additional vets gain experience using this technique and more facilities add leukophoresis machines to their cancer treatment centers, the hope is that BMT’s will become much more widely available in the next 3-5 years.

The second, and perhaps more obvious, reason that more pet guardians are not pursuing bone marrow transplants for their canine family members is the high cost of this procedure, which averages about $ 14,500.  If this sounds astronomical, it’s really quite a bargain.  For humans, a BMT can require up to 6 months of hospitalization and care, costing between $ 100,000 and $ 250,000 dollars.  While the goal is to eventually bring BMT’s for dogs into the $ 10,000 range, this is still a lot of money for most families, even if pet insurance covers a portion of the expenses. 


For Angel’s family, coming up with so much money in just a few short months was very daunting, but also led them to a new calling.  To help raise money for Angel’s treatment, they established a website called Save-An-Angel.org and worked tirelessly to raise the $ 16,000 needed for her transplant.  “I was truly shocked by the kindness of people and their willingness to help us save Angel’s life,” says Kristie.  “My fear was that everyone would shun us, but the majority of people that we spoke to showed us nothing but love.”  Motivated by the many dedicated pet owners that they encountered who were facing similar situations and encouraged by the success of their own fundraising efforts, they eventually decided to turn Save-An-Angel into a full-fledged non-profit organization to educate and provide financial assistance for dogs with lymphoma who could benefit from a bone marrow transplant.  Save-An-Angel is currently hoping to have official non-profit status by the end of the year.


Angel Sullens: Cancer Survivor


Today, Angel is back to her old self — full of energy and cancer-free.  She’s also developed new-found confidence.  “Before Angel was diagnosed, she had a touch of anxiety,” says Kristie.  “But this experience has given her infinite strength, and nerves of steel.”  Angel is back to enjoying long walks and playing with her brother Romeo at the park, and the hair that thinned so much during treatment has already grown back.  Along with her parents, Angel is now on a mission to educate others about the potential benefits of bone marrow transplants for dogs through Save-An-Angel and hopes to continue inspiring others with her success.

    Angel’s Journey: Lessons Learned




Romeo and Angel are looking forward to many more happy years together now that Angel is cancer-free.



Don’t be scared to ask for help.  You may be surprised at how many amazing people there are out there that WANT to help you!   There is no way that we could have saved Angel’s life on our own, it was a community effort.  You might even make some new friends in the process! 


 STAY POSITIVE – no matter what!  When you are stressed your dog can feel it, so try to make sure that they feel happiness and love radiating off of you.  When Angel was going through chemotherapy I noticed that she was becoming increasingly stressed on our ride to the vet.  Once I started to relax and smile or talk in a soothing voice she would relax and I would too!  Worrying accomplishes nothing. 


Love unconditionally, be consistent, act quickly, be persistent and KNOW that where there’s a will there is always a way! Be prepared to focus the majority of your time, money and energy into getting your dog well.  They won’t get better overnight, but the benefits far outweigh the sacrifice.  Focus on being happy!

We Are The Cure Blog


The 2nd Annual Canines for the Cure Texas Agility Shoot-Out held in Fort Worth, TX, on August 13-14, 2011, was one for the history books. Once again, the North Texas agility community showed the world what can be accomplished when everyone comes together for a common good. This year the Shoot-Out once again surpassed all expectations by raising $ 42,300 for canine cancer research, bringing the two-year total to $ 71,500!! Way to go Texas!! Many of us have lost dogs to cancer, but as a direct result of the efforts of each and every person who attended the Shoot-Out, we are confident that eventually many of our canine companions will be saved from this terrible disease due to the research that we helped sponsor.

Each year the Shoot-Out spotlights a local dog that has been lost to cancer. Our first year we honored Ranger, the dog whose death inspired the creation of the Shoot-Out. This year, we honored Libby, an Australian Shepherd loved and missed by Pamela Meeks. Libby was an extremely shy rescue that blossomed in agility and became the first rescue dog in ASCA history to be ranked #1, and she held her #1 ranking for two years. On January 30, 2009, though, Libby lost her life to hemangiosarcoma and that loss is what drove Pamela to become an integral part of the Texas Agility Shoot-Out trial committee.

Obviously, one person, not even one club, can pull off an event of this magnitude. The core team of Christi Farley, Pamela Meeks (Fort Worth Agility Sports Team), Linda Knowles (Gold Medal Agility), and Nikki Heep had numerous individuals and clubs step up to lend a hand with an astounding 104 people volunteering to work at the trial. There were 266 handlers with 382 dogs running a total of 1,975 runs over the weekend with one handler coming all the way from Sherwood, Arkansas! We could not have pulled this event off if it were not for the agility community totally embracing the concept. Everyone – trial committee, judges, chief ring stewards, course builders, raffle organizers, memorial wall creators, raffle ticket sellers, ring crew, competitors, vendors, and anyone who bought a raffle ticket -  was an integral part of making the 2nd Annual Canines for the Cure Texas Agility Shoot-Out a smashing success. We look forward to seeing what next year’s event will bring!

“My heart broke on March 9, 2004. I numbly listened in the veterinary office as the


diagnosis, treatment plan, and statistics regarding late-stage lymphoma hung in the air


while Lucky, my four-year-old, super-fast Sheltie, sat at my feet. My erratic outbursts of


‘Are you sure? She doesn’t seem sick’ interrupted but didn’t


stop the vet from finally saying, “She will die of cancer within


a year.” A silent ’No, Lucky won’t’ comforted me until a mental


reprimand reminded me I was in denial. “She is on today’s


schedule to start chemotherapy and by the way, no more


agility.”

Our war began with a potent cocktail of two drugs and


followed a variation of the Wisconsin/Madison protocol that


lasted 36 weeks. Lucky’s body responded well to the drugs and


her lymph nodes immediately returned to normal. As quickly


as Lucky had gone into a clinical remission, she had also gone


into a depression.


Chemotherapy was working, but Lucky was dying of boredom. I honestly felt that she


should die happy doing what she loved best, agility. Returning to agility, Lucky’s mental


and physical health improved and mine did too. I stopped crying and started to fight the


cancer. Lucky brought home blue ribbons and defied lymphoma’s death sentence. Agility


is the one place where Lucky is Cancer free. There are no needles or prodding, she is just


a dog running agility and winning smiles and ribbons.


I knew the fight wasn’t over so I continued to research


treatments globally with a focus on new human therapies


since dogs and humans share similar DNA, environmental


exposure, ingest the same foods, and have the same cancers.


Researchers considered her a gold mine because she


was young, fit, and fighting off cancer.


Four days before the 2005 USDAA Chicago Regionals,


Lucky came out of remission even though she had far


exceeded treatment expectations. My vet was undeterred


and gave Lucky her first chemotherapeutic drug in seven


months and said, “Go compete!” And yes, we qualified. Thank you, Kirsten and Dare!


Unfortunately, this time the lymphoma was really bad and the drugs were not


working. Lucky’s body had become toxic to some of the drugs while the cancer had


become resistant to others. Lucky’s first round of chemotherapy had been so successful


that we withheld the most powerful drug so that drug was in our arsenal, but only for five


doses. Additionally, one of the researchers I had found used an ancillary therapy (similar


to one used with breast cancer) that he believed would work well with the chemo.


Lucky’s last chemotherapy appointment was October 15, 2005. Upon finishing the


chemo, the vet said, “That’s it, no more chemo. Thank goodness she’s in remission.”


Huh?! Yes, Lucky was in her second remission. I was stunned. No one knew how long it


would last. That was seven years ago and she is still in remission. Lucky will be 12 years


old on August 28, 2011. She is fit, still doing a little agility, and running around and barking


at everyone just like any Sheltie. Lucky dog indeed!”

The South Florida Chapter of the National Canine Cancer Foundation was proud to host their 2nd annual Bark and Bowl on Friday May 13th, an un-lucky day for Canine Cancer!

Returning to the place that started it all, Palm Beach Strikezone, the Bark and Bowl almost doubled in size from the 2010 event.  50 teams and over 500 people joined this must attend annual fundraiser that generated over $ 42,000 for Canine Cancer Research.  The Bark and Bowl is made possible by presenting sponsor Florida Public Utilities, Budweiser, the Petco Foundation and HALO, the only dog food to receive the National Canine Cancer Foundations Seal of Excellence.


The 2011 Bark and Bowl recognized working dogs in our community that are susceptible to this awful disease.  We were joined by the Palm Beach County Sheriff K9 unit with Officer Ontario, a German Shepherd, and Officer Clue, Bloodhound Unit.

Barbara Masi, Technical Specialist with the PBSO Animal Kindness Unit, attended the Bark and Bowl with a heavy heart and an all too familiar story to tell.  Just 2 weeks earlier she had lost one of her 2 very special Greyhounds, Comet, to Osteosarcoma.  The Comet and Bullet Team were the ambassadors of the Sheriffs Animal Kindness unit attending special events, schools and summer camps, not to mention appearing as “Bowerina’s” in A Midsummer’s Night Dream.   Comet lived a full life and had more accomplishments than many people, but to all of us we know he still left too soon.   You can visit Comet’s Rainbow Bridge Page:

His brother, Bullet, was diagnosed with extraskeletal soft tissue Osteosarcoma just a year ago and has undergone 2 surgeries and 5 rounds of Chemotherapy.  Recently we discovered that the Cancer had moved into Bullet’s lungs.


The National Canine Cancer Foundation presented Barbara with one of our Pink Paw WeAreTheCure.org hats personalized for Comet and Bullet, in appreciation for the work she has done and the fight she continues to wage against Cancer.


Our top team this year was Spunky Doodle Velcro Strips who raised over $ 3,100!  That is the top team fundraiser from ANY of the NCCF events and goes down in the Bark and Bowl record book!  For the first time, teams that raised over $ 1,000 received free Pawgarita’s and Strawberry Dawg-iri’s all night long with over 10 teams hitting that goal.  Top team shirts went to “The Cure Hunter’s,” top team name to “Barkers Bellevue” and because it’s 5 O’clock somewhere, best lane decorations went to “Barkeritaville.”

The City of Roses had a new name on January 22, 2011, the City of Paws; Pink Paws that is!


That’s because over 200+ friends came out to support the Portland, Oregon areas very first Bark and Bowl to benefit the National Canine Cancer Foundation.


Cancer is a major health issue in dogs with 1 in 3 dogs being affected, and of those half will die. The National Canine Cancer Foundation is a nationwide, contribution funded, 501 (c)(3) non-profit dedicated to eliminating Cancer as a major health issue in dogs by funding grants directly to Cancer researchers who are working to save lives, find cures, better treatments and accurate, cost effective diagnostic methods in dealing with canine Cancer.

Common Seaweed May Provide an Important Cancer Cure

The answer for lymphomas and other forms of cancer may have been found in an extract of common brown seaweed according to research presented this month at the AACR Dead Sea International Conference on Advances in Cancer Research. At the conference, which was held on March 7-10 at King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center, Dead Sea, Jordan, researchers from the Hashemite University in Jordan reported that brown seaweed contains the compound fucoidan which kills cancer tumors.


The researchers used an extract of the seaweed on lymphoma cell lines cultivated in the laboratory and found that the extract suppressed lymphoma growth while leaving healthy cells intact. The researchers also noted a significant increase in apoptosis, or cellular death, in lymphoma cancer cells.


Lymphoma is divided into two classes, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s, which are in turn further classified into B-cell and T-cell groups.


“Some forms of B-cell lymphoma are especially resistant to standard treatment and thus new therapies are needed,” said Mohammad Irhimeh, Ph.D., assistant professor of hematoncology and stem cells at the Hashemite University in Jordan. “In this study, we looked at a new treatment strategy using novel active compounds derived from a natural source — seaweed.”


Irhimeh said that research would continue to study the mechanism of fucoidan with the goal of conducting phase II or III clinical trials with human volunteers.


Previously, seaweeds containing fucoidan have been found to have anti-tumor activity in mice and some cell lines, and Japanese researchers at the Biomedical Research Laboratories and the Research Institute for Glycotechnology Advancement found that seaweeds containing Fucoidan caused various types of established cancer cell lines to self-destruct. Examples of cancer cells that self-destructed due to fucoidan included certain kinds of leukemia cells, stomach cancer cells, and cancer cells of the descending colon.


About 4 percent of the total dry weight of many types of brown seaweed is made up of the polysaccharide known as Fucoidan. Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide that has a complex structure. Its main components include a sulfuric esterified L-fucose, a healing sugar, and the trace elements of galactose, xylose, and glucuronic acid.


Fucoidan has been touted as one of the ocean’s greatest treasures. Among the many benefits reported for fucoidan in addition to being an anti-tumor agent are: helps modulate the immune system, supports normal cellular health, supports blood circulation to native body cells, acts as an anti-contraceptive, helps reduce cholesterol levels and supports healthy joint mobility at all ages. In addition, it is believed that fucoidan may help stimulate immune response when the body is attacked and may help regenerate healthy skin tissue.


The people of Okinawa, Japan enjoy some of the highest life expectancies in Japan and also consume one of the highest per capita amount of the seaweed kombu. The cancer death rate in Okinawa is the lowest of all the prefectures in Japan.


Fucoidan’s anti-cancer properties may also be good news for dogs and cats. Lymphoma is one of the most prevalent cancers in dogs and cats and, as noted above, lymphoma is one of the types of cancer which fucoidan has been found to be the most effective.
